ONCE A UPON A TIME IN BENARAS BY SUNAINA LUTHRA

ONCE A UPON A TIME IN BENARAS BY SUNAINA LUTHRA

With excitement and curiosity neatly ensconced in my bag

My journey unfolded as planned

I thus set forth with a cheerful swag

Unfurling my solo trip with a gaiety,

A miraculous strength let lose my brevity

I conspicuously noticed my inner calling

Benaras: “The City of Ghats”

Its versatility seemed so enthralling

In its sanctity, I stride

Tourists buzz envelopes, a bursting tide

Amidst the crowd, I found a pilgrim stand

Intimidated and awestruck in an unfamiliar land

With Confluence of disciples from all over the world

Each prayer seems a melody set to be unfurled

Mere words are less to describe it

Entwined in the rich tapestry of culture and tradition; so divine

Spirituality thus awakened in the city so profound

With veracities befalling

Looked over by the cumulonimbus clouds

Rawness is its identity, imbued with rich history

Strangely away from gripof modernity

Made ‘Benaras’ for centuries sail with Dignity

Union of mighty rivers ‘Varun’ and ‘Assi’

Lookedso graceful

My association with ‘Varanasi’seemedfateful

Restoring all religious tales

It’s ‘Kashi’ where devotion hails

The sacrosanct, where holy ‘Jyotriling’ is manifested

A sight of ardent devotees left me enchanted

A rare blend of celebration of life and death

The tranquil holy waters, was a mesmerizing sight

An enigma; the holy river prayer

mesmerized in the euphonious chanting

The ceremonial fire blaze; a delight

What more to say!

A hint of life’s uncertainty left me amazed

A seat for all religions to thrive

‘Varanasi’ is indeed an epitome

Of lost spirits to get revived

With serene memories concealed in my  heart

It was indeed, an overwhelming depart
